Does anyone know of a somewhat "foolproof" way to physically identify a 292 six, from a 194,230, or 250 eng? It would be great when at the wreckers to open a hood and say "nope" and move on to the next one, without wasting a lot of time. Also what year trucks are they commonly found in? Thanks, JD

fuel pump located behind passenger side mount on 292 and is in front of mount on 194,230,250 also the side covers are taller on 292, trucks, busses, stepvans from mid sixties to late eighties

Yup, 66/Stepside has it. The quickest, easiest thing to look for is the location of that fuel pump. The fuel pump and the right side motor mount swap positions between the 292 and the smaller sixes. If the pump is in the middle of the block, it's a 292.

The 292 passenger side covers are 6" tall and the others are 4". The 292 block deck height is about 2" taller. See the other posts for fuel pump, distrib. and mount location info.

Just my thoughts,

This is incredibly obvious once you've seen it.
