I'm gettin ready to relocate to Bakersfield CA and was wonderin if any of you fine folks can give me some insight into the fun and games I have to look forward to when I bring 'Tater down and have to put new plates on her. I am wanting to be able to use it as a dump truck since she's just not pretty enuf not to, so I'm lookin at whats involved as far as paying tonnage fees, local laws that may trip me up, etc.
Any help would be appreciated as I am weighing the costs of getin her there and the other fun stuff. I dont want to sell her, but it may come to that if it's going to be more hassle than it's worth,... frown

1956 GMC 370 dump " 'Tater "
1970 VW Volksrod "the Black Bomber"
2007 Chevy Avalanche
2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk,
2005 Harley Davidson FLHTCUI

I dig all cars, old and new, whether they were hammered out of American iron, German steel, or Japanese tin cans. Being unable to appreciate them all is missing out on a world of great things.
But thats just MY opinion!

Thanks to those folks that have been sendin me messages about this stuff, you've been a real big help. Sorry I haven't been answering them tho, been on the road and today looking at new homes. I'm not liking the idea, but more & more it looks like 'Tater needs to stay in Washington. Might stay at our old place till we decide if we're keeping it or not. Will give me time to finger out all this registration, transportation, and WHERE in the heck to keep it!

Bakersfield sure isn't anything like where we'd like to settle down, but there's nothing for me in Washington. In three months of applying in a wider and wider area for lower and lower positions/pay, I got one call back. With my talents and qualifications, thats a hint, time to leave.
Whidbey is a real nice place, but we're not at the settling down for quiet twilight years in the countryside stage. Whidbey is too secluded and expensive for people that have a more active lfestyle.

Ok folks, since many of y'all have been buying & selling these big rigs longer than I have,... However, the house we'e trying to buy doesn't have room for 'Tater, and if I get to know the neighbors and find out she'd not be welcome, I'm interested in finding a fair price for her. I know what I put into her in parts and labor, but what thats worth to a buyer,...
Altho, if I could find someone who has an old GMC pickup or even better, a delivery, I may seriously look at a trade. grin

So! A rundown of the work to date:
New shoes, all new rubber & tubes on cleaned/painted rims.
Brake system:
-new MC
-all new lines
-new Hydrovac
-new front slaves
-honed and rebuilt rear slaves
-fresh shoes and tight mechanism on drive shaft brake
Custom electrical system, aircraft grade wiring w. junction blocks.
Fresh rebuilt 270 cid, all casting numbers correct for 1956
-recently instaled manifolds, with all new 2.5" pipe, flex joint and rubber hangars.
-NOS Holley carb with oil bath filter converted to paper element
-Bosch 12V "Blue" coil
-Stainless steel oil lines, custom fit to engine and external oil filter. Quick-change oil plug (integrated valve).
Newly reworked generator, fresh volt/reg, new spiral battery
-Newly rebuilt seat frame and springs with black over red tuck'n roll cover that I made myself
Fresh rebuild on L/R spring shackle, and pins (had planned on doing R/R too, just no time).

Probably a few other items I forgot, but those are the big ones. Body is rough, needs windshield and door glass, both doors, and cancer repairs on cab. Otherwise a tight truck. I know what I'd like to get from her, and of course there's always the option of trading for a smaller truck of the same year series, I just dont wanna look like I'm on drugs if I have to list her for sale. grin

Again, thanks so much for the help you folks have given me, it's been a real blessing. smile
James
