Does anyone have a part number for the belt that would work for this? I am at work, and would like to get one on the way home. The two most often seen are 5/8" and 3/8"? That will determine which number you are looking for.

I am presently running a 3/8" belt on my new 1954 235 install let me check tonight and I will post any results tomorrow. I have a brand new 5/8" as above if anybody wants it they are 9$ new just pay postage and it is yours.

1953 and later 235 (and all 261s) had the 3/8" grooves/belt
Earlier 235s (and earlier 216s) had the 5/8" grooves/belt

The parts supplier books show 3/8" and 5/8" for the 1954 235 and 261 engines. The online manual shows a 3/8" belt or a 11/16" which is enbetween 5/8" and 3/4" ? http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/chevyresto/54151.htm The 1954 corvette 235 has the 5/8" belt and pulleys.The lower radiator hose is larger in diameter on the 1954 corvette 235(1 3/4 " vs 1 1/2" ).

The 5/8" pulley is however shown for the the 53-55 Utility Body 235/261. The page shows the width and length for the various applications. Maybe I am reading it incorrectly. However, it looks to me that the page you linked confirmed what I posted from an earlier page: some Utility Body 235/261 had the 5/8" pulley in 53-55. All other 54/55 6 cylinders appear to have used a 3/8" pulley.
The belt lengths are helpful but, for some reason, I recently found that I had to go back for different size belts when using a 1954 3/8" 235 water pump and 6v generator on a 1960 261 with 3/8" pulley on the harmonic balancer. This might have been due to the different locations that the generator adjustment-arm attaches to the engine?

Yes, even having the original part numbers and lengths may not ensure that you can get the correct belt the first time for an older piece of equipment. Especially if the pulleys may not be all original. I just ran into this last night when I tried to buy a new fan belt for my 68 Corvette. My research on the internet indicated that I needed a Gates 7530; the counterman at my FLAPS claimed the books said I needed a 7535. Luckily, I had the car in the parking lot and I showed him that his choice was too long. I had similar problems recently with my 261 with an alternator. Do your homework, have patience, don't give in or up, don't get too mad at the counterman if he has problems with an engine that nay be twenty years older than he (or she).

You right about patience, and about being nice to the counter person. It is interesting to note that NAPA in our area (20 or more NAPA stores in 30 mile radius) seems to have hired a lot of young women - they have been more helpful and more willing to check the old books than most of the men.
