Mine are stripped out so my speedo cable doesn't spin. NOS would be nice.... On My 1940, the cable was broken where it goes into that speedo driven gear. I find it more likely that the cable is broken than it would be for those gears to be stripped. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 | Some speedo cables had a square on the end and some had a key. The two don't mix. Make sure you don't have a mix. The square end can become round and the keys can wear off and like bigbad said, cables can brake. Gears seldom strip. Or you may have a gear that doesn't mesh with the worm gear. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 | What kind of transmission? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 35 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 35 | The tranny is a stock 4 speed/compound low. I have removed the cable, its perfect. I can easily spin the gear in the tranny that the cable mates with by hand. That's why I believe the gears are stripped inside the tranny. How does one remove these gears when I do find a set? It appears I'll have to disconnect the driveshaft and disassemble the universal joint assembly as well. Any suggestions or shortcuts? | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Clean the area around the driven gear very good and use a 15/16”- 6pt thin wall socket to remove the driven gear. Yes, you guessed it, you will have to remove the u-joint and press the drive gear off. There are no replacement gears made by any one so about all you can do is advertise in the wanted section here or on the other sites for used gears. If you can. Unscrew the driven gear from the transmission. This is the best way of seeing what you have.
When I got my transmission the speedometer wouldn't work either. I am switching from the 3 speed column shift to the floor 4 speed. I found that someone had taken the back housing off of it (I have a 53 1/2 ton with the enclosed drive shaft) and left two of the bolts in the housing. When they put it back together the bolts got between this gear and the gear of the transmission. Short story is that it messed up the driven gear. I hope this is not your case.
These driven gears are not impossible to find. I found mine at a swap meet in Fort Worth. You can always check at the salvage yards and the 'older' transmission shops.
Best of luck.
