I'm continuing the rebuild on my 55.1 chevy pickup with a hydramatic tranny. I found 1 broken spring in the dampner hub on the torus cover of the hydramatic. Some of the other springs seem loose too, although they appear to be equal size across from each other. Does someone have a torus cover that they can look at and tell me if those springs are different sizes, and if the broken one can be replaced or do I have to look for another cover.

Mine was the same way besides the neck being worn on bpth the inside and the outside. Check my webshots and you will see pics. www.areds.com rebuilt it for me. There are pics of that also on webshots album. http://rides.webshots.com/photo/1401772265047579877NtvUoD?vhost=rides

Thanks Greg, the pix are very helpful. It appears that the springs are different sizes but equal size across from each other. This probably is to involve more springs to dampen the effect of increased torque. I'm going to try a machinist friend to see if his company can manufacture a new spring. Unless you know someone who sells these springs. My torus cover neck looks great on the inside, but has a small groove on the outside. The new oil seal seals tight though

lil' buffalo,

Just a thought. McMaster-Carr has hundreds of "die springs". If you go to there site and search for die springs, you can select from a plethora of items by OD, length and wire size. You might just get lucky, and they're cheap!

Give these guys a call.

http://www.fatsco.com/index.htm

They've been in the antique transmission business for at least 40 years, and they know what they're talking about. They've probably got exactly what you need right on the shelf. I've been doing business with them for 20 years or so, and the only problem I've got is trying to understand the damyankee accent of the guys on the phone!
