For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2008 Posts: 49 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2008 Posts: 49 | The transmission in my 55 2nd series has been changed to a later model. The trans has the following numbers cast into the side:
GM23 8825647 F82
The following number is stamped on a machined spot above these on the right side of the transmission:
12w419838
Can anyone tell me from these numbers what transmission this is? Since it is not the original transmission, is it the same or a different length as the stock? Length measures 21.5 inches from front to back. How will this effect a change to a T5? Will the T5 still be longer than 21.5? I am trying to figure out if I will need a shorter driveshaft.
Thanks, Hugh

Not knowing the type of transmission you're currently running in your TF, the shortbox S10 driveshaft would have the correct yoke and u-joint to bolt to a Chevy differential if the T5 was from an S10. You may or may not have to shorten the driveshaft depending on the specific differential you are running.
A little more specific info about your engine might be helpful for the TF folks to help you with your question.

PO said "350 engine and transmission is out of a '69 Chevelle". Engine numbers check out to be a '72. I was trying to find out what year the trans actually was. Engine and trans are mounted to stock bellhousing with crossmember mounts. Rear end appears to be stock. 7 bolts on trans side plate means it is a Saginaw? Notice from the photo that the top right mounting hole is broken off, only 3 bolts holding it in. http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee39/h4040510/1955%202nd%20Series/Trans.jpgSecond photo shows floor shift in relation to seat, too far back and too close to the seat. http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee39/h4040510/1955%202nd%20Series/DSC_2713-1.jpgI plan on getting a T5 and installing over the winter. I am trying to find out if this transmission is shorter that the T5 and will I need to shorten the driveshaft. I don't know if the driveshaft in the truck is original or if it is shorter or longer because of the previous trans swap. All comments appreciated. This transmissions rating would make it in stock form, only marginal behind a 350.
Several modifications to the shifter location and speedometer drive gear position are outlined in the "Hybrid T5".
Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
