Anybody doin' this?
I may have been in the heat too long. I had a thought today of doing my truck in flat black, with blue and white pinstripes. Maybe even some door art advertising my Dad's part time junkyard.
"Rocky Hill Auto Salvage" in white with blue trim.

Haven't ever done that, but if your looking for opinions, I've seen good and bad. One local has one that is stone cold ugly, but I've seen some where it just makes any chrome pop and just looks clean. I think alot depends on the body work done or not.

You might check out the current issue of Ol' Skool Rodz and perhaps Rod and Custom. Both have recently had articles on doing a flat paint, as opposed to just leaving primer. Better protection for the metal than leaving the primer.

That's what got me to thinkin'. I painted the door with a dark primer, and then put on a new chrome door handle and gas cap. I started wondering how nice would a chrome grill look up front, surrounded by those acres of flat black fenders and hood...hmmmm.

This is the paint they used. They've also done some good articles on how to lay out door art signage on old trucks.

I'm only interested in finding and cataloging samples of the vintage door signage. I've seen good and bad new door art and always encourage people to do that THEY think looks good.

It's your ride and it should reflect your personality.

i read somewhere that you can mix primer and clear coat so there is more protection than just primer.

Now THAT'S a cool ride... anything more polished is NOT a true rat rod... IMO, of course. If you're going to do it, do it right!

I saw one just like that pull into a car show towing a trailered $30k Harley and everybody gathered around the rat, nobody looked at the bike.

Flat black does not a rat rod make.

Beautiful ride joker.

ok...just my opinion.

This is what I consider a ratrod. It also happens to be what I had to start with for my truck...nothing more. I find ratrods to be fenderless beatup looking vehicles.

Now I personally like flat black paint, whitewalls, baby moons, colored rims and less chrome. I also like to keep the truck looking primarily stock even though it may not be.

So this is what I did to mine for the end result. Some people love it and others ask me if I plan on painting it to which I have to reply that it IS painted.

Hey neighbor-Nice truck..Maybe too nice for a ratrod...IMO ..I see you have some goodies in it..I have a 55 and my hopes are my next truck will be a 41-46..and I'd love to have the drivetrain and suspension/steering upgrades you do.

joker, zipper, those are not ratrods. Rather they would be considered Suede Rods. Very cool. Almost did that myself when I had the '55 in black primer.

I wasn't considering the end result a ratrod. I was considering the first pic where it was just a mess. I consider the end result a hotrod and was actually going for the old school hot rod look that I personally like.

I guess the problem with the ratrod term is it is now a generalized term for old school traditional rods...which drives the purists nuts by the way...do not use that term on the Hamb cuz you will get your butt hole torn wide open.

Oh yeah...and thanks Keith. Find the truck you really want to do and then go for it. Be another against the grain guy and use a different drivetrain...my whole ford setup is sweet.

and again I will state it...I LOVE Joker's ride. He has a hit a sweet spot in my eyes with that car.
