I am putting new emergency brake cables on my truck ('51 1/2T Chevy) and can't figure out where to put the gaskets.

Does it go between the two sheet metal mounting brackets OR does it go between the backing plate and mounting bracket?

The originals don't have a hint of gasket left (if it ever had one). I've looked in the assembly manual and shop manual with no luck.

Paul, this one had me scratchin' my head too. I reasoned that the gasket goes between the two bracket plates because otherwise there would be no need for it to be a "slotted" gasket.

I'm in process of doing the same thing on my '50. The loose metal bracket goes on the inside of the wheel plate and it is a snug fit to get it through the hole. The gasket goes on the outside of wheel plate seperating the bracket. At least this is how both of mine were before I removed them to replace. I hope this makes sense.

Mine weren't like that Coug. Both brackets were on the outside of the backing plate. I considered trying to get one bracket to the inside in order to "sandwich" the backing plate but discarded the idea because I thought it would cause a "zig-zag" in the brake cable which could possibly bind up and not allow the cable to release.

Well, stir the pot boys!

Mine came apart like Laroke's (thanks for the link) with both brackets on the outside of the backing plate. So I assumed that is how it should go back. Hard to tell what's been done previously over the last 53 years.

After installing one with both brackets outside, and one with bracket on inside and outside like Cougs. I think the correct way is to sandwich like Cougs describes. This puts the spring and cable at a perfect distance from the backing plate.

If I install with both plates on the outside (my original way, Laroke way) then the spring rubs on the backing plate - doesn't look right.

Of course, all of this is very easy for me to tinker with because the differential is clean and up on saw horses in a lighted garage. grin Out on a gravel driveway I would probably have slammed it in the original way and lived happily ever after.

I'll post pictures tomorrow. I think I'll sandwich the brackets the Cougs way.

I just replaced mine about two weeks ago. I don't believe mine had ever been replaced. They were both on the outside back of the plate, with the gasket in between. The new ones worked great this way. I did try the sandwich way, and found that there wasn't enough room in the brakes.

I sandwiched my backing plate between the two brake cable plates like Coug. Wasn't that hard to do. I never got the gasket in my kit. Oh well....It's working just fine.

Would some of you share your source for the cables??? I need to find some for a 1939-40 one ton or 3 ton Chev truck.....

The reason for the vagueness on the year or size is the truck was built in 3rd week of May 1940 as a Canadian CMP military truck based on a lot of available civilian parts readily available at the time....

Thanks for any leads....

I just sandwiched my '54 hydramatic. After getting the two plates correctly positioned on both sides of the backing plate, I then slipped the gasket between the inner cable plate and the backing plate and tightened securely.... grin

Bob C.: These are on a 1/2T pickup and I got them from Chevy Duty . Whether they are the same for your truck I couldn't tell you. I can measure length if you like.

Here's the pix of installation both ways. I can find no interference when using the sandwich method. It may look like the bolts are close to the shoe but they are not, optical illusion.
