Has anyone used the Dupli-Color Paint shop finish system they sell at Auto Zone or Napa? Its Pre Mixed and ready to spray. Also how much paint is needed to put a couple of good coats on a 54?

You should contact Dupli-Color and let them know the kind of sprayer system you will be using. HVLP will use less product that non-HVLP systems.

This is a lacquer-based system.

You will get mixed feelings about this. Most people that you talk to that do this for a living will tell you to stay away for a few reasons. 1st this dupli-color paint shop series is, as stated above, a lacquer-based system. Most will tell you lacquer is old news and will tell you to look into a urethane-based paint system which has the fast drying and ease of repair of mistakes/runs/blemishes as lacquer and the durability of other paint systems. 2nd, its a pre-mixed system which can mean trouble.

Ive read a few reviews on this system and its been mixed, some will never touch it again, some will. One thing to remember is that the reason some have had a bad experience with this system could be because of an ill prepared surface or mixing different types of paint. A properly prepared surface is very important, you could have the highest quality paint but it don't mean anything if you don't properly prepare the surface before laying down paint.

Ive used this system, in fact I just got done using it today. My plan is to use it on the firewall (engine compartment side and interior side), toe board and floor. I just finished spraying the inner firewall and toe board and next weekend plan on spraying the outer firewall (engine compartment side) and the week after will be the floor. So far I haven't seen any problems and plan not to as most of it will be covered with sound deadening material (aside from the outer firewall). The paint layed down really nice and this is the first time I ever held a spray gun. Im also using a HVLP gun that I got from Harbor Freight(so far no problems with that either).

If you plan to stay with a lacquer based system I would look into a higher quality paint manufacture. For about the same amount of money that you will spend on 4 cans of dupli-color paint (4 quarts at $20+/- comes to $80 for 1 gallon) you can get a higher quality lacquer that you don't have to worry about having problems with (aside from poorly prepared surface problems).

I plan to get my next purchase of auto paint supplies from this place, but for the exterior I decided to use urethane.

choose your color, then type of paint and then click on "gallon" to see the price per gallon. Its usually cheaper to buy by the gallon then by quart.

The past few weeks all Ive been doing is researching and reading posts on forums and reading how-to books on automotive painting as I have never done this before and want to make sure I don't have to do it again.

Im pretty sure just the amount included in one of those kits (about 1.33 gallons) will be more than enough to paint my truck. As stated you go through a lot less paint using a hvlp gun. Im also using the dupli-color paint for the interior and engine compartment so that will save me some more paint for the exterior.

Please do not use a laquer paint. Use a paint that has a hardner.
