When you open the door from the inside, you should be pulling back and up. In otherwords the resting handle points down at about 7 oclock. This makes it convernient to lock the door from the inside by pushing it forward.

I don't think that there is a correct position for the winder.

I'm not aware of a "correct" position as in getting points deducted at a concourse show for the position not being "correct". There is a rule of thumb for both the door handle and the window crank handle. Put the door handle in a position where it's easy to operate AND is out of the way of your leg/knee. It get uncomfortable in a hurry when your leg is resting on the handle. The window crank handle needs to be positioned where vibration and gravity won't let the window roll down. Place it where gravity pulls the handle in the closed direction when the window is both up and down. I can't tell you how many times I fixed a "the window won't stay up" complaint by simply repositioning the handle.
