Mine had slowly taken on a slight curve which wasn't angled enough to "catch" the rod when you apply the emergency brake pedal. All I had to do was remove the flat bar and bend it back on an angle so it could catch on the shaft again.

I think that if you disassemble the mechanism, you can stick the little flat bar in a bench vise and sharpen the inner edge with a rat-tail file. This will give it new 'tooth' and allow it to grip the pedal shaft again.
