Could I pick one up at a truck junkyard, or is it more of a quest than that to find one?
Thanks, John

Have you talked at all to the owner?
I used to live in The Dalles and if you are headed down to pick it up and would like some help, slow down coming through Seattle and I'll come along.

New Process, a heavy duty Spicer 5spd., or a 6spd. automatic [Powermatic], power would then be transmitted through a 3spd. power divider, with 3 ratios low - 2.22 to 1, intermediate 1.22 to 1 and direct 1 to 1, hope that helps | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,189 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,189 | John, Jackson's has a yard full of them, they are on every air brake truck, however brackets and pulley sized may be different from truck to truck. Gary may have one in his parts pile... Looks like the 8700 has Air Over Hydraulic Brakes. I'd be all over this truck if it weren't 3000 miles away . It would cost more to ship it here than the asking price Mike B | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 207 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 207 | the compressors are easy to find you can get them rebuilt from napa or a used one from a junkyard. you would have to supply oil feed and a oil drain and make a mounting braket. | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,903 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,903 | I guess you guys know a CDL would be required to drive it and anything that can still be used Commercially is is almost impossible to insure as an antique vehicle. Commercial vehicles are expensive to insure. | | | | Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 38 Apprentice | Apprentice Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 38 | The tandem does appear to have air over hydraulic brakes and looks to have a 5-speed tranny because the truck has a clutch pedal instead of a retarder pedal. The retarder pedal has a different shape than the clutch pedal and the retarder pedal rests closer to the floorboard. Very neat truck!!!! | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,903 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,903 | It must be air over hydraulic because it does have hydraulic brake pedal. The air-hydraulic cylinders were a lot of trouble, and are now pretty obsolete. | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,144 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,144 | I don't know about all states but in maryland you can stlll get non commercial license in the same classes as the CDL air brake test might still be required. I would think hobbyist would be able to get one in that catagory if their state offers the non commercial license.
Insurance can be a problem on anything larger than 1 ton antique. Gulfway seems to be the only insurance broker that goes after Antique Commercial Vehicles and their posted policys are much more liberial than some of the other policys. I've heard they are a little more expensive than JCTaylor bout easier to work with.

Federal law requires a CDL to drive with a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of 26,001 lbs or more. There are certain farm exemptions including hauling crops from the field to the market, but a person has to prove he is either a custom harvester or a farmer by profession. This truck would probably have a gvw of 38000 to 44000 lbs. depending on what axles are under it. This is why trucks like this are very cheap. They are really not reliable or efficient for daily commercial use, and they are too expensive to own for casual use. | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,144 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,144 | i never could figure out why there would be an exemption for farmers as farming is a commercial enterprise (other than a powerful farm lobby). i've forgotten all the exemptions but fire fighters were also listed when they first came out with the cdl. I figured state and county workers would be exempt but when my stepfather went to work for the county they required him to get a cdl. | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,189 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,189 | This truck should have Chevrolet axles rated at 15k each (if still original) with a GVW of 28,000 and a GVCW of 45,000. All vehicles with over 26,001 GVW must have a CDL (Class A for trailers and Class B for straight jobs). Only fire fighters and farmers can drive Class A or B vehicle with a Non-Commercial Class A or B license. By law, all of the drivers of these big RV Coach's are also required to have Class B CDL with Air (if equiped). Mike B | | |
