Hi All,

I've been noticing that small/midsized GM vans are practically being given away in my area. Usually they have the 4.3 V6, and 700R4. I don't know how the front suspension is configured. Would the rear end or any other parts work ? Anyone had any experience ?

I think if you measure the track width you'll find they are too wide. The front suspension is similar to a C-10.

One thing the T-5 equipped Astro and Safari vans do have is a short throw shifter, shorter than the S-10 vehicles have. This is a more desirable shifter for our older vehicles. It allows a longer shift stick allowing a more stock like shifter set up. The only problem is that the production of Astro and Safari vans with the T-5's are limited compared to the ones equipped with 700R4 transmissions.

The engine and trans are about the only things you would be able to use without major modifications. The rearend is specific to the M vans, and has the center section offset almost 1/3 of the way to the right of the axle centerline. The engine is also offset the same amount to clear the steering shaft. The front suspension (depending on 4x2 or awd model) has more in common with the S/T trucks than the C/K. The steering linkage is unique to the M van, with 2 idler arms plus a drag link from the steering box to the center link. This system is very prone to severe wear in the idler arms. These vans are also unit-body, there is no separate frame under them, only a front sub frame similar to a Camaro.

Thanks for the replies, just something that caught my eye and made me go hmmmmm ?
I've got a low mileage 4.3 Vortec on hand, and the front suspension, steering etc. from an early 80's GM pickup. I'm looking for the right rear end with a truck bolt pattern to fit my AD panel, and ideally match the bolt pattern of the '80's pick-up.
I want to go automatic so a 700R4 seemed a good way to go. I'll keep lookin and thinkin'.

The Astro/Safari vans have the same T-5 in them as the S-10's, just a shifter adapter to move it over towards the driver about 6-7 inches. This is an add-on piece that would need to be removed for putting into a narrower vehicle.
