Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 18 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 18 | I just rebuilt a Rochester model B carburetor, everything seemed to be OK at first. I soaked it for a day and flused and blew everything out before I put the kit in. After it ran for about fifteen minutes I adjusted the idle adjusting needle valve. I adjusted it all the way in and it still never made a difference as to how the engine ran. Than I noticed gas running out of the acclerator pump housing. I shut the engine off and could not get any stream of gas when I activated the pump by hand. I took off the Air Horn and the fuel bowl was full with gas to the top of the float bowl. While rebuilding the carburetor I noticed that the new spring which went between the power valve ball and the power valve plug was tapered at both ends. The old spring was not. Maybe it is not in correctly. I would appreciate input from anyone with an idea. The float adjustment is perfect but the fuel keeps running into the bowl.

I'm not a carburetor expert but it seems to me that if the float is adjusted properly, isn't full of gas or binding on the side of the chamber then it should shut the fuel off. If all this is true then I would look for a piece of debris in the seat area.
It only takes a tiny piece of crud to hold that needle off the seat and flood the carburetor. Look closely.
I don't know about your tapered spring issue but I know there are two check balls that must be in the proper position in order for the accelerator pump to squirt. If you have the rebuild sheet from the kit I would scrutinize it and make sure everything was in its proper place.

May want to/have to use the old one if you kit didn't provide a replacement. The tapered spring may not allow the ball to be moved by the power piston causing your problem. Easy fix!
