It's not to bad,I'v had mine out a few times, almost need to stand on your head to get at it though.Just one thing, don't brake the tube for the tempature gauge.
You might not need to replace it though,I'm working on the same thing now,and from what I'v researched there are a lot of things that will keep it from working.Does your gauge go to full with the key on or do nothing?

Disconnect the line that goes from the gauge to the sender. Then turn the key on. If the gauge pegs to full, it is OK. If the gauge does nothing, it is most likely bad.

the truck came with a gas gauge under the dash so it has been disconnected.

If it is disconnected, it won't do anything at all. It will have no power, and no grounding from the sending unit either, but if you have connected it, right, it should do something.

Since it's had an aftermarket guage added (most likely because the original quit working) there is a good chance you'll need a new sending unit as well. The aftermarket one may not be calibrated properly for use with the OE style gauge.
