I am currently getting ready to install a 350 small block in my 53 3100 and was wondering what is the easiest way to hook the clutch pedal assembly up to the modern V-8 bellhousing I am using a 1973 1/2ton donner truck and will be using the toploader sm465 Muncie truck 4speed from that truck I know my 53 doesn't have a Z bar assembly has anyone done this conversion with a mannual tranny? I asume I will have to use the 73' bellhousingand starter, unless anyone knows of a conversion kit so I can use my stock 53 bellhousing and starter? I want to retain the pedal operated start button as well and the only way I know to do that with the modern syleniod starter is the use of a electrical pressure switch mounted to the proper firewall location
Does anyone know where I could buy a adapter plate so I could use my stock stovebolt bellhousing? I know they make Auto tranny adapters for the stovebolt 6 but I want to go the other dirrection ie.. V-8 4speed however I want to maintain a totally stock apearance in the cab and exterior of the truck, Just don't lift the hood! Thanks for any advice in advance! This is by far the best site I have found so far!
PS: my 216 engine, bellhousing, tranny, starter, torque tube rear end, and shaft go on the swap meet this weekend!!!

Zach,

I'm doing about the same thing. I'm putting a 283 in a '50. The bell housing that was on the 283 had a hydraulic clutch with the clutch fork(?) on the passenger side. That won't work. I had a bell housing out of a '67 Chevy with the clutch fork on the driver's side that was in the same location as the 216's bell housing. However, when I cleaned the bell housing, I found that the bell housing is cracked so I need to find another one. What is the configuration of the bell housing that you have? Where is the clutch fork located?

The bellhousing off a manual tranny Chevy 250 from about '67 or so will fit your V-8 and some of them have non hydro clutches, I just got rid of one. It had a four speed hooked to it, too.
