The paint is really thin and fragile and has some rusty places comeing through,it could use new paint but I'm not at that point of doing body work.Because the paint is so bad I plan on stripping it to metal if I ever paint it.
Will putting some paste wax on it help hold it together a little longer, and not hurt anything down the road?

Most waxes have a cleaner which is nothing more than a fine polishing compound in them to remove oxidized paint. Be aware that you will probably remove more of the paint as you wax. You can get wax without the cleaner but I've never tried putting it on over oxidized paint so I don't know what the result will look like.

If you are going to paint the truck at some time in the future. Do not use any wax or polish that contains silicone (beware: many manufactures do not state if they use silicone). It is very hard to remove silicone residue - it will ruin paint jobs.

Here is a heavy-duty polishing compound. There are many other brands and different (smaller) grit sizes available.

Tim makes a good point I didn't think of. If you do put any kind of wax on it be sure to use a good wax & grease remover on any surface you intend to paint BEFORE sanding. If you sand it first you can drive wax residue into the surface that can be difficult to clean out. When using wax & grease remover wipe it on wet and wipe it off before it dries. If you let it dry before wiping it off all you did was move any wax to a different location. Use lots of clean rags.

I was just thinking of useing something simple like Johnsons paste wax,it's nothing more than bees wax if I remember right. And as for the silicone it's to late for that we got some down the back of the cab when we put the window in(didn't know about how bad it is to get off).So if I get to paint it the surface will need to be cleaned with something, but thats going to be a while,i'll wash it with a good cleaner and then steam clean it, that should get it clean.

Oh, about the windsheild should the rubber be pulled out over the lip or rolled against it?
