I was wondering weather it would work to convert
to disc brakes on my 50 gmc 3/4 ton I would like to do it on all four wheels
would it be worth it?

There are three ways of getting disc brakes on your 3/4 ton. This guy figured out a way to modify the existing hubs. It may be easier to swap the 3/4 ton straight axle for a halfton, then use one of the many disc conversion kits. The third way it to go IFS, which makes more sense if you're planning to do rear discs (which means a new rear axle). Personally, I would do front discs only, it will still give you much better braking and you won't have to re-invent the parking brake linkage.

I'm interested in your brake drums if you do this conversion!

From an engineering standpoint, Dorsey's use of mild steel is not wise. There is not enough strength there to use with something you have to trust your life with.

Kook,
Are the brake drums the same between 3/4 and 1-ton trucks and Chevys and GMCs? If so, I'm sure I'll have some spares soon.

I wonce saw a disc brake kit for GM 14 bolt axles
that used rear calipers off a caddlac eldorado
so that you had parking brakes and it also used the parts of a chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 front end
(it was on some off roading web site)

I would NOT want a 1/2 ton front end in my truck
I have being thinking that I would only do the front as the rear brake drums are qite large and seam to have plenty of stoping surface
it will probebly depend on how much mony I have wen it comes time to do the brakes

Use mild steel for the mock-up and for the final set-up use T-1 steel.
