I have since purchased another engine hoping this would be a bit more of a repairable option but i cannot find anything on the size of it no matter were i look Inliners do not appear to list it (or i just cannot find it ) can someone help me out here is the cast and s/no cast - 839253 2 44 s/no CR4057942 the motor /gbox was removed from a 1947 Maple leaf truck if its the origional i have no idea

If it is out of a 2 1/2 ton Maple Leaf it will be a Chevy, if it's out of a 3 ton Maple Leaf it will be a GMC, likely a 248. 2 1/2 ton truck serial numbers should start 716----, 3 ton serial numbers start 717----, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy Tombstoneshadow, does the engine you're asking about have all of its head bolts on the same level, [all the same length]? If it does, then it's a GMC engine. On a pad just to the rear side of the distributer, there should be a number stamped into the block, post that here and someone should be able to identify it, hope that helps.

This newer engine i have purchased still has the same high side cover near the plugs ,large plugs , 2 bolts to hold tappet cover on a lot more casting ribs on the manifold side of the block , appears to be origional grey ,the rocker gear appears to have small ( v ) on the rockers ,the only numbers that is on the block is those that i have given i will take some pictures and post them here in a day or so with the head cast number as well, it was advertised on ebay but i ended up buying the whole running gear out of the truck ebay link http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=180270673036&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=008 | | | | | Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 10 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 10 | Finally got a couple of photos up hopefully someone can identify the size and year Sn/ CR4057942 head cast 38773 block cast 839253 2 44 number behind starter L 16 4 pictures here http://rides.webshots.com/album/565530519pgiymdthanks in advance | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | This will not be much help:
head cast = 1937-40
number behind the starter - block casting date = Dec 16, 1944 ?
Serial number preface = C (that last preface before WWII was "B" and the preface in 1945 was "D")
I cannot find a reference to the block casting code, but between 1942-47 there were some codes that started with 839
Maybe someone else can clear this up?

3 9/16 is the bore of a 235 and 3 1/2 is the bore of a 216 | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 388 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 388 | i am nearly sure its a chev motor as i have a 235 that was identified with help from you guys on this forum 235 i since have found out is a hi toque engine has 235 stamped on the sump, small plugs in the head 1/8 rings ,flat top pistons 3 9/16 bore etc (any more info about the small spark plug heads would be nice to know )

All of the "old" casting numbers on the "new" engine seem to to indicate no later than an early 1940s engine. However, I do not recall seeing a 216 or 235 with so many ribs on the manifold side of the engine. The Chevrolet 1929-1954 Master Parts Manual indicates that the 1940 and earlier 216s had the 14 mm spark plugs, the 1941-1948 216s and 235s had the smaller 10 mm plugs, and the 1949 and later 216s had 14 mm plugs again. Hope that this helps, rather than confuse, you. i did get a surprise
it measured up as a 235 but has been re sleaved, the bottom end babbit rods are immaculate looks like i finally got a winner after all , gentley put the clean sump back on ran out of time to do any more
Thanks to all those that replied its amazing all the different varients of engines plug sizes etc in such a short time but stll leaves the engine number prefix open for debate
CR ????
btw the crank cast 839111 c10 42 (6)
CAM CAST 8?8733 GM608 im not sure of the meanings but for those that collect numbers you may find it interesting | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 388 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 388 | The numbers in the Chevrolet Parts Manual indicate that the crank may be a 40-41 216 and the camshaft a 37-53 216. A 216 could have been bored to 3-9/16"; a measurement of the stroke (3-3/4" for a 216, 3-15/16" for a 235) may be in order, when it is convenient. Source of valuable information. Hoyt | | |
