Most of them are welded in place. If they weren't, it would be difficult for the spring to stay in the middle of the lid where it is supposed to be when the lid is tightened down. I always mask off the whole underside of the lid and spring anyway. I never want to chance paint chipping off and getting into the oil supply. Every Fram filter I've seen has a spring that's not meant to be removed. Ones that are not welded are retained by bending a tab over the coil closest to the cover. This tab WILL break if you try to bend it. Mask it off and set it in an open tin can to paint it.... that's what I do. Good luck!
