so i installed an aftermarket set of gauges in my 63 recently and the gas gauge is reading way off. i found this out lastnight when my gas gauge was reading about an 1/8 tank and i went to put 20 bucks in it at the gas station. i could fill up to about 19.50 and the darned tank was filled to the brim! i was completely confused but at the same time thrilled that i somehow had a full tank of gas although the tank didnt read it haha. i guess over the past few weeks when i've thought i was on empty i was really still like half full so i've continued to put money in it when i didnt need to. any tips on how to correct the gauge? the gauge was made in the early or mid 90s so i'm wondering if it could be that its gone bad or something. any advice is appreciated. thanks.

Sounds like what I went thru when I installed Dakota digital gauges in my 55.After reading the instalation instructions,I found out there were about 6 different settings fo the fuel gauge. Just gotta find the right setting. I definitly helps to know how much fuel is in your tank when you calibrate the gauge.

Patrick,

The electrical value of the sending unit and gauge must match.

I'm going to guess that a '63 has a common 90 ohm sending unit and I'll bet your gauge might too. See if the install instructions for your fuel gauge specify you install one of their senders too.

If everything is matched properly you can bend the float arm on the sending unit itself so the FULL-EMPTY readings are more accurate.

If this error came about after your new gauge was installed it might be a mis-match with the sending unit.

In my area, $20 dollars worth of gas would hardly move the needle at all...my old Silverado takes $88 clams to fill with a factory tank! Let us know how it turns out.

yeah the error happened after i installed the new gauge, although the old one did read like an 1/8 tank off. there were no directions with it because i bought it used from somebody. maybe the best thing to do would be just to buy a new gauge and be sure it matches with the sending unit.
