Well over the weekend I found a spare rearend for my 1 ton,I think it is a 1 ton rear(5.11).But what I'd like to know is if there are any numbers I can look at on it to see if it's a 4.56 (3\4 ton)rear?I tried to turn it but I think both brakes are stuck. And if it is a 4.56 and I want to change my gearing can I put the gears from it in my 1 to axle?

If the 4.56 gears are the same dimensions as the 5.11 then yes. I am just not sure if things got bigger on 3/4 to one ton trucks.

The center chunks will swap. There's a cole of ways to fing the ratio. 1 is to find the serial numbers and decode them, another would be to pull the rear cover and count the teeth on the ring and pinion gears, a third way would be to find the stamped numbers on the ring gear. One more way, since the brakes are stuck, would be to pull the cover and the shafts out of the axle (easily done on a full floater) and turn the pinion and cound the number of turns to 1 turn of the ring gear.

Actually in at least some years the deeper gears (5.14) were an option in the 3/4-ton trucks, so finding a 3/4-ton rear is not a guaruntee of the 4.56 gears.

Thanks,I'll have to look at it closer when I get it home. For $30 I thought it was worth a shot,if nothing else I'll have some spare parts.
