Unfortunately the Importer drowned it in red oxide primer! cry

Mine's a California truck too; don't know its history, but in the glove box was a ticket from San Francisco Cow Palace dated 1968.

I've found a guy in Bishop's Castle, Shropshire who's into "rat-rods" and restores old Yank iron. Does everything from patching to full restorations. He's got a couple of nice Fords (are we allowed to say that on here? blush) in very used condition, though they're a bit of a street sleeper as one's got a very hot supercharged lump in it!

I'll post some "after" pics as soon as I get them.

BTW, I bought mine from a guy in Whitchurch, Shropshire; he trades as "Old Tin & Things", just opposite the truckstop on the A41. He imports a lot of 50's stuff, and he LOVES old 'Bolts! 01948 662290 ask for Ted or Jan. Nice bloke to deal with.

Hey you guys up in Scotland, I know there are many Chevy & GMC truck nuts roaming around England, mostly military truck collectors. I've met several of these guys here at our BIG swap meet in Central California. Over the years they have shipped TONS of spares home from the West Coast of Cal.

Spent some years in Holy Loch way back, chowing down on mutton burgers and warm beer, what fun. Best restaurant in Greenock was Chinese.
Cheers

About 20 years ago the Glasgow Diamonds played an (American) football game against a team from the Holy Loch, you guys seriously kicked our B*tts! grin I can't remember the score (dunno if I want to!)
As far as food is concerned we've finally realised we're sitting on some of the finest and healthiest food you can buy/catch.
The Scottish diet has improved a little since you were here!

Athough you can get...Deep fried Snickers! big_eek If you listen carefully you can hear your arterys hardening while you eat it! Never tried one....gag!!

jockbolter50, I do remember some very nice fresh trout served at a local spot and the deep fried bananas were grand. We finally learded the secret to Queen's Hour, a mid afternoon stopage of all work, even the pubs tossed us out. Everyone hopped on board a ferry boat, didn't care to where as they all served booze.

I do miss a tv show from there, "The Two Fat Ladies", hilarious and was also a sort of travelog made many trips to Scotland.

Jim

Alas there's only one fat Lady left. Sadly one of them 'passed' a couple of years ago. frown
Mrs Jockbolter and I are 'foodies' and tend to watch a lot of the cookery programmes.
Another good one is the 'Hairy Bikers' it's a laugh a minute along with some really tasty grub! thumbs_up

jockbolter, One more happening that's stuck in my brain was a great dance hall in Glasgow, called Lacarno's or something like that. The place had a revolving stage so when one band was going off, the stage slowly turned and presented the next group. Not watching the stage you'd never notice the new band, very cool. I've always wondered if The Beatles ever played that joint?

The latest and greatest Food Network show out here now is "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, check it out if you can, the host is from Nor Cal.

That's all for now
Jim

Just starting to restore now the kids are off our hands.
I am building a web site which I'll post shortly.
They are all cars tho.
kind regards

To any Bolters in Manchester, UK. or Dublin,
I will be on business from Jan 9 to the 18th. I would like to meet up with any enthusiasts in the area. PM me if anybody is interested in getting together and talk about Stovebolts. I've got a 1952 3100 that has been mildly restored. I will bring my laptop with some pictures.

Hi Mitch, It would be a pleasure to meet a fellow 'bolter from the States, but unfortunately it's a bit too far south for me!

Work commitments keeps me north of Hadrian's wall and as far as Dublin is concerned there's a big pond in the way! eek (Enjoy the Guinness though wink )

I know of a couple of Welsh 'bolters, but just how close they are to Manchester I'm not sure.

I see by the date your probably packed and ready to head over,so maybe a 'Brit' 'bolter might contact you while you are here.Just keep an eye on the Forum.

Good luck and bring some Vegas sunshine with you! brrrrr

Jock,
Thanks for the reply. According to my tourist map you can get here to Dublin by the Giant's Causeway. Might be a bit rough in a Stovebolt (and wet). Hope someone will respond as I will be here for one week. Leaving Dublin on this coming Sunday, the 18th. The Guinness is much better here by a long shot than in the States!

Hi from Johannesburg South Africa. Add me to the international list as well. I have a 1961 Apache 10 with 235. They were plentifull here until the sanction era of the 70's/80's when GM abandoned us!
Anyway do enjoy my truck and hope to hear from more Africans!

Hi 61lorrie,nice to hear from you.(Nice truck by the way!)
Another International 'bolter from another continent. I think we just need Asia to complete the set! grin (Mind you I'm not sure if there's any Stovebolts in Antarctica!) headscratch

Not long after I got my '50, Mrs Jock and I were doing the weekly shop, as we approached the market I spotted a familiar shape. It was a '48 Chevy pick-up! (ANY Chevy is rare here, other than re-badged Daewoos) never mind another A.D.
I immediately realised it was an African model. My wife wondered how I new. It had the steering wheel in the right place wink and had the small white reflectors on the front wings.
It was being used as a promo vehicle for a schnapps company. (I wish I'd kept track of it) it was a real beauty! NO RUST! eek I wonder where it is now?

I'm sure there are other African 'bolters, maybe they'll chime in soon!

Welcome 61lorrie . It's always nice to see another international stovebolter sign on . When I was a wee pup my family lived a bit north of your location - in [censored] - that is until a small war broke out in the late '60's . My father was a professor of Agricultural Economics here in Kansas and was on a teacher swap with one of the northern [censored] universitys . Enjoyed my time in Africa but would have liked to see more of it. ED H

Been a while since I've logged on here; I do miss the Spoon!

As promised a while ago here's an update on the GMC, went in last year to have some work done 'cos the rust was holding the rust together!

Truck Refurb 2008-9

You'll have to forgive me for showing a F*rd in that album but it belongs to the guy who refurbed the truck for me; as you can see by the others he ain't all bad! smile

Do let me know if you have problems viewing it 'cos I'm kinda dumb with PC's.

Hi Kev she's lookin' good! Your pics were fine.

I'm glad you didn't mess with the patina too much. BTW where did you buy your bed wood kit?

Looks like she'll be around for another 46 years! thumbs_up

Dunno Jock, the guy who did it for me (BH Welding at Pentre, Montgomeryshire) sourced all the gear. Looks good though, but I might have to shift a few load of lumber to get it scuffed up like the rest of the truck! wink

Kev ; Liked the pictures . I had a ferd of the same vintage when I was in the army in '74 based south of Seattle in washington state . It had a flat head Mercury V-8 in it hooked to a '37 ford non-synchroized 4 speed transmission. Faded purple painted cab a sheet of 3/4" plywood for a bed with a 2"x4" in front and behind the rear wheels so that the flat piece of sheet metal could be nailed to the fromt 2"x4" and curved over the tire and then nailed to the rear 2"x4" thus making the rear "fender" . That was one Ugly truck !!! But boy it sure could run ! Keep up you good work on the ol stovebolts! ED H

Driving a F*rd! big_eek At least you've seen the error of your ways! You've redeemed yourself.

Mrs Jock drives a F*rd the same as this , but I wouldn't stop her! (Remember her ability with a shotgun?) eeeek

Just read the link to your wife's car, Jock; neat little motor I think but my missus don't like them; then again her dream car is a 67 Shelby Mustang! grin

We're getting married in April (hopefully the GMC will be ready in time) and she's going to the registry office in a 1996 Dodge Viper owned by the guy who services my oil boiler. It used to belong to Microsoft so I'm a bit worried about it crashing! wink grin

Hi Kev,
My 'wee' wife is tiny.. 4'11" and 7 stone, it's perfect for her! It's her daily driver. She had a saloon version for years, and never had any major problems.
I don't drive it...I wear it. (6'3" and 16 stone!) grin

I see your good lady has excellent taste, It's the one F*rd I wouldn't mind in my garage! Not that I could afford one!
(Pssst Don't tell anyone though! Especially Ed. nono)

There would be a fight as to who would drive as Mrs Jock loves early 'Stangs' too! I think Steve McQueen's got a lot to do with it. dang

Congratulations in advance, Mrs Jock and I wish you well for your 'big day'

Don't forget to post the pics of you setting off on your honeymoon in the old 'Jimmy!'

P.S Watch someone doesn't tie some old tin cans to the back they might chip the paint! grin

Regards Jock thumbs_up

Hey gang ... oh, it's Peggy but I'm using John's log-in since he's been here.

I had meant to have this forum in the achieves for a while and we would bring it out every once in a while. I thought I had checked all the boxes so there'd be no new posts here.

PLEASE don't get me wrong ... it's great to have more discussion. But we'll bring this particular forum back up into the Grassy Knoll in early spring.

TTFN,
Peg

Herriot, you've been conspicuous by your absense, I've just checked out your web page and I can see why!
Your fabrication skills are second to none and the '38's shaping up to be a stunner.
I can almost see the shine on the chassis from over here!

I'm getting close to the 'big day' myself and can't wait.
Keep up the fantasic work.

The instruments came from New Vintage and I'm going to run with the original radiator for the time being.
It's water tight(for the moment) so hopefully it'll hold up to the slightly higher pressures and if it comes to it I'll get it re-cored.
There's a place in Glasgow that can do it for me if needed.

I agree,it does get more difficult to get motivated in the garage when the temperatures start to drop.
Hopefully though it wont get as cold as last winter! brrrrr

I've just finished installing them thanks to a tip from fellow Stovebolter/HAMBer Danimal.
They're just slightly smaller diameter than the originals but IMO look as near factory as I've seen for aftermarket gauges.
The wiring was really simple although I've yet to run power through the system.
I'd better not let the smoke out the wires! wink

took the dash off (the whole dash bolts out )and measured the gauges.the woodward ones are approx 3/8 bigger but that just means removing approx 3/16 all round and they will look like they grew there.got good news yesterday my custom length drive shaft is in the post.

We've just activated the Legion Hall forum in here, so we'll soon be taking down the International Stovebolt tent. Be sure to grab those email contacts before we start tearing down!

Hope this has been some help to folks. I was surprised to see over 20,000 views in here. Great going!

Thanks Peggy, for giving 'us foreigners' our own room to play in!

It's been fun and I've met some interesting folks from near and far!
I agree it's time for us to stand down and give the Vets from all conflicts the praise and recognition they deserve.
