#43748 09/13/2004 6:36 PM | Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 4,066 Bolter | | Bolter Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 4,066 | my truck will sometime die when at high-way speed and then will re-start by itself, does not do it a lot,,and sometime I get a faint back-fire,, I have noticed that I have a small crack in my vent hose going to the gas tank, would that cause it and also could this be some type of vapor lock, it is weird that you can drive for many miles and it may not even do it,,the truck is a 54 235 engine with mallory electronic Ing........it stalled on the way home from the meet , went from 60 to about 35 and then fired back up and no more problem, thanks for any and all suggestions......Fred

I typically attribute a sharp stall and restart to an electrical problem. Sputtering and stalling is usually more of a sign of a fuel problem.
Did you have the clutch disengaged when it restarted or was the trucks momentum acting as a starter? | | |

A sudden and total loss of power (engine run) followed by later restart can, on rare occasion, be the result of fuel starvation. But, that is usually more intermittent and residual fuel will usually allow some irregular running or sputtering.
I don't know nuthin' about fancy electronic ignition systems, so you are out of my league there.
Drivin' down a 2 lane country road in a stovebolt.....cowboy, it don't get no better than this!

Those wires have a nasty habit of breaking the conductors inside the insulation, and interrupting the circuit under the proper vacuum and load conditions. The stock HEI ignition was notorious for flex wire problems with the pickup coil, and it's possible your aftermarket ignition system has something similar.
