This has been discussed quite a bit on here. Do a search for rivets. The consensus was if you bolt it together, use grade 8 bolts. The theory behind rivets is that they fill up the hole completely instead of relying on the squeeze of the cap and nut. We use a ribbed carriage bolt to replace rivets when we attach trailer cross members to the side rail. The ribbed shank fills up the hole like a rivet. http://www.imperialinc.com/grp040.shtml The same company also sells a flange bolt which we use in truck frames. Properly tightened bolts are more than adequate for his purpose and unless the bolts loosen there will be no movement between the parts being held together. I could not imagine the amount of abuse you would have to heap on a bolted frame to cause the bolts to fail. | | |
