I bought this rearend from a guy and I thought he told me it came out of a camero or nova but talking to some local guys they seemed to think they never put 6 lugs axles under those cars and it had to have come from a truck. The width from drum to drum is 62". I'm fixin to rebuild the brakes to put it under my '49 but it might help if I knew what I was working on. Thanks for the help guys!

Appears to be a rear end from a 1/2 ton 55 to 59 chevy pickup could be a late model 54.

'55 First to '59. If you can get the numbers that are stamped between the 2 bolts on the far right side of the 3rd memeber, we can pin it down for sure.

well dang that's a let down! I've looked all over that rear and couldn't find anything close to numbers, just those lines on the sides of the 3rd member. If I were to stand in front of the rear looking at the pinion yoke, should the numbers be on the left or right? Thanks again,
Jeremy

From the front, it would be on your left
Here's some pix showing the location.

If it were a '55 2nd-'59 the mounts would be on top.

'60-'62 Chevy truck used those rear ends too. If it's not the '55-'59, due to the spring perch location, then it's 60-'62, which is 6 lug, good and wide, has the brake line mount in the same location on the passenger side, and has the trailing arm perches on the bottom of the housing.

I scraped and cleaned the whole pumpkin and found no numbers anywhere. The only thing I could find was on the brake cylinder it says:
"Delco
Moraine Prod
Dayton O USA"

I don't know if that even helps but there it is. I do beleive the guy I bought the rearend from had removed it from a '47-'53 truck but he had bought the truck like that. The leaf spring perches were poorly welded on by someone- not factory and have an extra hole drilled to center the rear in the fender, but I can find no other signs of other spring perches that were on there originally- coil or leaf. Thanks for the help!

This sounds like a closed drive housing with a 55.2 differential installed. If the housing does not show any signs of ever haveing spring perches on top, they could have been removed very carefully. The reason I am thinking 55.2 and newer differential in an older housing is that the cover does not have a drain hole. I think 55.2 had a drain plug as well as the fill plug.

At this point I would suggest pulling the punkin out of the housing and count the teeth. If it is a fast v8 automatic ratio, who cares where it came from. If it is a good ratio, this will help identify it. The punkin still looks Spicer to me.

No drain plug on the '55-'62s, just the filler. It'sa slo definetly not a Spicer, those have integral housing instead of the 3rd member like this one.
Ratios will be one of 3 choices, std 3.90, or the 2 options, 3.38 and 4.10.
You may have to look closely to find the numbers, they usually aren't stamped very deep, and can get lost under a coat of paint.

I stand corrected. I was thinking Spicer because because I have been looking for Spicer parts the last couple of days. I have one like the picture in my shop.
It's marked GM HO33. Mine is 3.90, 17 spline axle shaft. 3.38 was the automatic trans ratio. If you can't find numbers, count the ratio.

I have to replace and rebuild everything with the brakes cause it is just trash and need to know what I have of course to get parts. I cleaned the whole 3rd member and found no numbers, just those lines and on the side a circle of dots about the size of a quarter with a larger dot in the middle- probable doesn't mean anything tho. I may pull the 3rd member tomorow then and see what I can find. Any ideas please let me know.

The circle marking is the time/shift that the 3rd memeber was cast. After loking at your pix, it looks like the id numbers have been obscured by rust on the right side of the carrier, may not be able to decifer them.

I pulled the cover off and the ring gear has 39 teeth and the pinion has 10 teeth and the ring gear is roughly 9" in diameter. On the outside of the ring gear I found:

3697702 10-39-GM 2 64 1 2-22

I don't know if that means anything but I'm hoping someone can tell me. I tried to find out the ratio by marking the yoke and drums and counting the rotations but must be doing something wrong.

10 X 39 teeth is a 3.90:1 ratio. Just divide the number of pinion teeth into the ring gear number.

Thanks Hotrod! Anyone know if the numbers on the ring gear mean anything?
