I have a 1962 Chevy c-10 with a 235 6 cylinder. The heater hoses were disconnected because the guy I bought it from said the core leaked. No problem just get a new core, well looking at the heater it does not resemble any in the shop manual nor does the core measurement match any replacement cores. The firewall has plates over the holes where a deluxe would fit one is square another is rectangular above and the fire wall cardboard inside has knock outs that have not been used.
Were trucks sold without heaters in 1962? Could this have been a aftermarket of some type? Would any heater from say 1960 to 1965 work in a 1962?

Any answers will help.

It sure sounds like an after market heater. And yes, trucks were sold without heaters in 1962.

Thanks for the response. For restoration purposes would you go back with or with out a heater?

Hi
For my two bits worth. It would make an interesting conversation piece to have a truck that came from the factory with no heater. I do believe they did make a few that way. They would have been your basic model. The only problem is if you need the heater and defroster to keep warm in the winter it would be nice to have.

a few? trucks without heaters were common .... in areas where they're seldom needed [and a major assembly plant was Los Angeles] ... remember any version heater was an extra cost option, not standard equipment

I remember 'back in the day' [like about the 60's], the "options" got so bad we use to joke tires and a steering wheel were extra cost options grin

we have a 61 Apache, basically the same truck as you. There should be two small round holes in the firewall to the right of the square hole, About midway between it and the block. One round hole is above the other, they are not side by side. They are about 1" diameter. Your heater assembly, when assembled and installed under the dash, allows the core's stubs to protrude thru these holes. I at the time have my heater assembly disconnected and removed, sounds elementary but we have not taken the time to figure out how to post pics,. I will see if my wife can e-mail some pics to you today or if we can tonight.I am sure Tulsa's winter weather is not much different than here in little rock, heat and defrost would be nice in the winter on nice days.

This is an interesting thread. My 38 came from the factory without a heater/defroster but I'd assumed they became standard equipment long before '62. You know what they say about assuming. grin

Tiny - the 1960 accessories price book still lists any model heater as an option [$32 & $52], even for the cars ... it's actually much more recent they started adding everything under the sun, weather you want it or not, to jack the price up

Thanks to all!! This is great information!! The winters in Tulsa are severe enough at times to warrant heat and I have a line on a recirculating heater. By the way, I did not mention it but the VIN number has an L in it which codes out to Los Angeles. No need for a heater out there. I bought the truck from a guy in Yakima WA. It belonged to his uncle who had to move there due to age issues, may have been why a heater was installed. He passed away years ago and it has just sat in the garge for a long time. I should have a post to the Gallery soon!
Here are the photos.

VERY nice truck! Please say you're going to keep it original. Good solid survivors like that are hard to come by.

Yes I am a Vintage guy. I plan to keep it original. It is a survivor and a piece of history.
