can anyone tell me what i should check first when having this problem. it's a pain in the [censored] having to hold the column shift from slipping out while driving down the road.my truck is a 48 chevy all original(6 volt. 216 engine and original tranny and rear end)i can say this , it's not any of the linkage, could it be bent forks in tranny case? thanks for any advise!

Common problem with three speeds that are tired. Time for a rebuild. Bowtie Bits has all the rebuild parts you need to fix that.

You might need a full rebuild, but...

On the shifter thing inside the tranny, there is a grooved piece which engages the rotating parts and slides them around. This grooved piece wears. Easy and cheap fix.

Pull the tranny sidecover and inspect. It will be very obvious what the problem is, if indeed this is it. Remove the old one (circlip, I think) and get a new one.

Good luck!

It's tired mine started doing that, then went out all together after about 2 months. I pulled it and put in a T5 now she gets right on down the highway at like 2000 RPM..
