what will the difference be in looks between a 4.57 and a 4.11 differental ??
I have removed my 1951 chevy 3/4 ton pumpkin and a 1968 20 series pumpkin and a 1969 30 series pumpkin they look to all be the same 32 tooth ring gear and 7 tooth pinon gear. there are numbers on the 1951 (3882103 GM 7-32 1 51) and on the 1966 (3768612 GM 7-32 8 1966 2) does the 7-32 mean 4.57 ratio
thanks for any help Bill

7-32 does indee give a 4.57 ratio [divide 32 by 7] - not sure what the tooth count is for a 4.11 that would fit yer truck [if there is one], but parts books might tell ya, and some wreckin yards could too

I think that you will find that the 411 has 37/9 teeth and the 514 has 36/7.

Anybody know the weight of the pumpkin ? I found it was a challenging thing to pick up and carry out to my car!

**** , I guess the 1 51 Means Jan of '51?. I'm currently preparing to remove my 4.11 from my spare pumpkin to swap for some 3:55. The numbers on the current big gear says:

3652510 GM 9-37 2 52.

37%9=4.11

Feb '52, I assume.

Truckernix,
My wife shook her head as she saw me walking out towards my shop with our bathroom scale. With my son's help we got 100-101 pounds.

Thanks. Now I know that old men like me shouldn't be trying to carry around 105 lbs ! Actually the only tricky part for me was picking it up and putting it down. The carrying part was OK. The junkyard guy was at least my age and he handled it like it was nothing.

The ones that I saw in the wreckers had the two numbers stamped on the back of the ring gear. I understand that this is not always the case.

You might want to look at "Randy's Ring and Pinion" website. There might be some answers there. I found it very educational.

Luke's right about the gear count. I just bought one, 10 bolt with the adjusting nut for the pinion. Ring gear is stamped with 41 10 on the inside of the teeth.

Lockers (posi) are usually worth more, especially in 1/2 tons. But to put one in an AD truck, you need to swap the differential, not just the pumpkin.

Fred by differential do you mean the complete houseing - I thought pig/pumpkin and defferential where all the same thing??
