The block is painted chevy orange, but I thought the engines for these years were to be painted "blue flame". The engine was cast in '58. Should it be blue?

The "Blue Flame Six" was the name for the automobile 235 engine, starting in 1954 (and the name might have be used until 1962).
Take your choice: blue, blue-gray, or gray for the truck engine.

If it's been hot-dipped it would need to be painted to prevent rust, and that was the rattle can they had handy.

look in 67-72 10-30 series owners manuals towards the back, the colors are listed for engines such as 250, 292, 283, 307, 327, 350, GMC 230, 305, 351, etc
GM says red, and probably for alot more vehicles other than 67-72 GM trucks
