I don't know too much about that system, I'm not even sure this is a Pertronix (I'll check on that tomorrow). Someone mentioned to me that maybe the original spark plugs can't be used, that I need ones with larger gap? Anyone know about this? | | |

Joined: Mar 2000 Posts: 1,177 | The gap on electronic ignition plugs is usually between 45 and 60 thousandths, depending on the voltage of the coil. The higher the voltage, the larger the gap. However, Pertronix recommends you try .005 more than the standard gap. Pertronix webpage "What should I gap the spark plugs to? The Ignitor has no set specification in which the spark plugs should be gaped at. Every engine responds differently to spark plug setting. In most cases increasing the factory recommended gap by .005 improves the engine performance." | | |

Most coils for point ignition systems top out at about 25,000 volts, regardless of how they're triggered, with points or electronically. With a good clean set of plugs, the firing voltage will be about 8,000 volts, increasing to 12,000 or so under load. If you increase the gap too much without going to a high-output coil, the engine will miss on acceleration.
