Hi,
Does anybody have experience with a HEI and a flame thrower system? I been told it interrupts the ignition for some time to get some ignitable unburned mixture into the exhaust.
Did anybody try it with an ignition box?

Can it damage the HEI?

Jan, the HEI is a pretty rugged piece of equipment, as long as you're talking about the stock GM unit. Pertronix- - - - -now, that's another subject! Getting unburned gas into the exhaust system is a good way to blow your mufflers off or split some pipes, hoiwever!

I have seen a setup with a small spray nozzle threaded into the tailpipe behind the muffler, and a spark plug mounted back there to light things off. A quick squirt of gas through the sprayer from a small electric pump, and a spark from the plug- - - - -and there's a 6-foot plume of flame out of the pipes! It's VERY illegal in most places around here!

I second Jerry's comments on blowing mufflers. I did the original flamethrower - basically it cuts ignition and raw fuel is then sent to the exhaust system. This allows the whole exhaust to fill up and then bang....new muffler time as the end seam failed.

I made a unit with a set of spare injectors I had from a Honda, a bosche fuel pump from a VW Fox along with a set of spark plugs, two coils and some 555 timers. The injectors were 18" up the tail pipe with the spark plugs 12" up from the end. Worked well enough for me to determine it would be a safety hazard with 8' flames shooting out of the tailpipe. doing some post research I found they are illegal in most states.

ps, if you still plan on going ahead, make sure your tail pipe extends past the bumper or you will mess up the paint and your bumper as you let off the gas, the flames waft upward if there is still fuel present.
