I've had the 51 3/4 ton running for a couple of years now and have decided to keep it somewhat original with the straight axle and inline six. But upgrade the brakes and rear axle. I have newer heavy trucks so the switch to the 1/2 ton alows more options for rear gear ratios and front brakes. Plus as you know parts are cheaper and easier to find for the 1/2 tons.

Any advice on search topics to find the information I need will be appreciated as will any knowledge from those who have been down this road.

I would pull the rear center section from a GM truck up to mid 70's. From what I know the centers are the same on the 3/4T and up TC can help you, I think he has a few

Is this a Chevy or a GMC? GMC made a 1/2-ton long box truck that might help you identify the best approach. The GMC parts book would help select parts for this swap.
