while driving my daughters 51 pickup back from uconn the tranny just popped out of third gear for no apparent reason, anyone else have this happen? possible reasons?

Well first off Welcome to the Stovebolt site.

Now for your situation, well If its a three on the tree, well you might have a linkage problem. Possibly just worn out. Other might have better responses but this is what I suspect.

I think that most of them do at one time or another,,If it got to be a common problem then I might get concerned..
