But I'm back and anxious to get this Chevy on the road. When we bought her there was no tranny, we found one and got it installed but just have the shift levers connected with cotter pins, needless to say it locks up frequently when shifting. My first of many questions to come are what parts do I need and who carries them? I've looked through the archives and the shop manual and I'm guessing that a spring, a washer and a cotter pin were used but I can't find specifics, I guess I'm most curious about the spring and where I can find the right one. Don't want to have things coming apart on me! Thanks in advance, good to be back! | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 985 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 985 | Michelle you may need to replace some bushing in the Colum as I have heard that when the bushings go bad the tranny tends to lock up. What year is your truck? Anyways I would check the link page and check with the venders there.
What part of Michigan are you in? I am in the St. Joe area

If it is locking up in gear, you probably have mal-adjusted linkage or worn shifter parts on the column or a worn shifter box if it is in the 50's. The spring isn't critical as long as it isn't to difficult to compress with the washer to get the pin in. I have taken many linkages loose where someone used enough washers to take up the slack and used a small nail. To check adjustment, put the transmission levers in the neutral position and then the two levers from the column or box should be side by side. Then tighten the adjusting nuts and it shouldn't lock up unless there is excessive wear someplace.

I opened up the shifter box, cut two u shaped shims from 26 ga. sheet metal. I pushed the bottom shifter up and slipped one shim between the shifter and the box wall. I did the same at the upper shifter and that fixed it.You need to pack it with new grease. It may be a tempory fix as I haven't put very many miles on it yet. Jim Carter has shifter boxes for about $45. I think I'll order one for when the shims ware our or slip out of place.
Good luck,
Jerry
