Well ,, trying to keep a straight face ,, "why sure , that would be very nice " . So we exchanged Ph #s and moved on . Several months later , I finally got the time to see him , so off I went , and LOW , he was at an old service station , looked like it had been there since the teens , the old 1927 Hupmobile shop truck was still there in very restorable condition , several other cars , and LOTS of parts and INTERESTING STUFF spread all over in the shed. So we talked a bit and wandered around a little , as my eyeballs were sereptiously examining the parts bins ( spotting '39 chev gears etc ).......... Anyway , he finally asked if I wanted a new engine for my truck ........ well ........ how do you answer that one ??? , new ? sure , where is it ? . Right in that crate there . So there I was , looking at a NEW short block assembly , original packing , packing instructions , oily dusty crate , .......... hmmm ,, how quick can I get this onto the deck of the truck ,, LOL ,, "Oh , you will need this new oil pump , and the gasket set ......... " GOOD MAN ! I was so excited that I left with out the sump gauge tool set ,, LOL . Had to go back the next week to get it . I have some pics if someone wants to host them for me , I can email them , but not post them here ,, Whatta you all think of that then ......... But wait ........ there's more .......... Earlier in the year , I thought all my christmas's had come at once when , at a different swap meet , I found a NOS head , with a new set of valves . Of course I grabbed that , thinking , WOW , you never see NOS bits here now ......... Funny how it never rains , but it pours . .

The block has a waxy preservative compound that covers everything and the label that was wired onto the block says to strip and clean the unit before use . So I will do that , and while the cam is out , I plan to freshen it up a little , to aid the breathing and take the appropriate chunk off the head to make this into an 8.5:1 compression engine ,, all the better to run on todays gas . Perhaps give the odd FQRD a surprise too .

The sump gauge is another find. Some of the guys here have been searching the ends of the earth for one.

Thanks for that great story. I could just picture being in that old garage, poking around through all that stuff! What a great find! That should keep your old truck running for another 64 years! Great pictures too!

With Dusty's permission, I think that this should become a written up feature on this board. As Ralphy stated, this is a museum type find. I have read about the short blocks and I have some of the original ads. This hobby of old trucks is great but the stories behind them all are also a big part of it.

As some of you will know , my truck is my daily driver and shop hack . I have been wearing out the original engine for a while now and this has come at a very opertune time. Although I like to look at museum pieces , in a museum , OCASSIONALLY . I LOVE driving the '40 ALL the time . So the engine will be put to good use . bjrj51 ,, well spotted , this is indeed a 235 , I am expecting much better towing capabilities now . FredT ,, the sump gauge set is for the 216 , and I plan to copy it off and make a few . I really would like to find someone with a 235 set to compare dimensions and differences . The main difference , from my calculations , seems to be the extra length of the stroke on the 235 ...... any one out there with the 235 set ?? Truckernix ,, thanks for the considerate thought but since I have posted this on an open forum ,, I guess anyone is open to do what they like with it , and that's ok with me.

I see the amusing breakin instructions about driving speeds for the firts 100 and 200 etc. miles. That is right out of the owner's manual.

The large plate with the square holes has another plate underneath , that is not seen in the pic , that has a series of holes , that are used as targets for the oil flow from the tubes in the sump/troughs.Your garden hose is normally used to test the oil tube aglinement.
Sure are having trouble with the pics ,, I get a bunch of red Xs here ,, LOL ..
Edit ,, Hey , thanks Drew ,, got all the pics workin' now . Truckernix , the tubes are bent with a small tool , to re-agline them with the target holes.

I see the 235 has a metal timing gear as all the old ads state.

You know, now that you've shown pictures of the sump gauge, I think I've seen that stuff around before. I bet that my father has one in his garage. Next time I'm over there I'll take a look. Who would of ever thought you'd stumble across one such find, let alone three of them!

Museum find, though? No way! Trucks are meant to be driven and engines are meant to be run. Let it fufill its long awaited destiny.
