OK folks,

I have a 1941 half ton pickup with the original 216 and Carter W-1 carb. The motor starts easily and idles well. I took it for a 50 mile run today, very slight miss on acceleration. When I got home I pulled a plug out. It was black. All the others were the same. The air filter is new. I checked the mixture setting and it was set at one and a half turns out as per the operator manual for a 1941 truck. Idle speed set at 550. Are these setting ok?

Thanks guys

1.5 turns off the seat is a good place to start but, ideally you'll want to hook up a vacuum gauge to the intake (if there's a port available) and shoot for the highest steady vacuum reading at idle.
Clean your plugs up. Hook up vacuum gauge and let the truck warm up. Starting out on the rich side already (we're assuming from plugs) lean it out 'til it drops just below highest steady reading, then richen again until you get high steady read. The idea is to get as lean as possible without suffering any kind of performance problems.

Thanks Mugsy,

I'll get a vacuum gauge today and check it out. There is an outlet on the inlet manifold that has been plugged that I can connect it up to.

Cheers mate

I had a similar problem. I did a rebuild on the carb and when I went to put it back on I noticed there was a vacuum passage that comes out the base of the carb and goes to the manifold. The base gasket that came with the kit had no matching hole for this passage. The old gasket was also missing this hole. I cut out the new gasket and the truck has run well ever since.

if it dosen't need fixed, break it

Mugsy, I set up the vacuum gauge and adjusted as you suggested. Plug colour light tan. I think that I'll get a bit of use out of this gauge. Best $20 I've spent in a while. Thanks again.

Kedso, the carb was rebuilt by the PO. I'll keep in mind what you said though. Thanks for the input.

Right on man. Glad to hear it. It's definitely a handy little tool and I''ve sure gotten good use out of mine.
