What newer model motors (v6 or v8) will bolt to my old bell housing, and who has the motor mounts to make it easy? Walter [email protected]

What I meant was: In place of a 235L6 You can only bolt any other stovebolt engine, be it a 261, or a GMC, for example a 302. No V6 or V8 or even a 230/250/292 won't fit. The trouble lies in the fact that the earlier sixes do not have a flange cast in the block as the newer 250, for example have. By the way, these flanges in the 230/250 are the same as the V6 90' and all the V8's, small, W or big block. The bellhousing of a 235 will only accept stovebolts. No way to use another engine in it.

They have a really good article on putting a S-10 tranny in an older truck. [ 12-21-2001: Message edited by: 6T2Burb ] [ 12-21-2001: Message edited by: 6T2Burb ]

None of these compatibility issues and having to go around the world and back just to get your vehicle suitable for daily driving. Rebuild your 230/250/292, bolt a 700R4 behind it and you're ready to drive anywhere!

I don't know what bolt pattern You can have in a T5 out of a S10, if it has the old desing with the for bolts hanging it to the bellhousing, it's ok, if not You'll have to make an adapter. To match the Ferd T5 to the Bowtie I just used a 1" aluminum spacer. It worked very well, no problems.

This includes the 1948 Chrysler I drove while at college (frequently drove it between Baltimore & Wilkes-Barre, 200 miles on the I-state), the '50 Chevy Fleetline sedan, the '55 De Soto, the '48 IHC, etc, culminating with the present 1941 De Soto. True, pre-'60's iron doesn't much like the super highway, but frankly, now commuting 50 miles each day on I-81 where people just seem to be in a hurry to meet their maker (and take me with 'em!), I often consider taking the "senior" car and sticking to the U.S. & W.P.A. roads, and enjoying the ride! Now, back to the original question, yeah, nothing post '63 bolts to pre-63 where bell housings are concerned. Conversely, there ARE post-'63 engines & bell housings that will bolt up to the older trannys. There's more lee-way with trannys, and the angled rear-mounts of the post-'55 sixes and eights do fit the '54 cross-member, you'd just have to come up with side mounts for the front. I don't think I've even pulled the bell housing of a 235 or 216, except to put the block on an engine stand; it's a pain! You've gotta pull the flywheel to get at the bolts! I'm curious about putting the later 6 in an AD, since it will take the higher revs accompanying the stock rears better than the older engine; or... ..finding a tranny/rear combo that'll keep the revs down at highway speed so I can keep the old mill; or... ...maybe I'll just keep it stock & drive slow, and annoy all the "important" people behind me in their SUV's :p Frank

Thanks Frank. Didn't think about that one. I've driven my '66 w/230 on the interstate for over 100 miles, taching at LEAST 3k the entire trip. And I've done several 50-70 mile stretches taching 3500 rpms. Totally stock! No problems whatsoever. :p -ftyler

OR, find a bellhouse from late 50's trucks with ears on them and make/use the small mounts on front of engine or probly could use same side mount x-over kit like I mentioned above. The bellhousings from 55 to 67 all have the same size center holes for 4spd trans. After that they have a bigger hole for newer 4spds. I vote to rebuild the orig six and re-install! :p
