1st and 2nd only applies to '55. The engine serial #, which is stamped next to the distributor, and the block casting date, located above the starter, will verify the engine as far as year. I beleive the main difference between 1st and 2nd on the full pressure 235 is the water pump mounting. The 1st has the pump mounted partially over the head, the 2nd is only on the block.
They made the first series of 235s well before '55 and continued the second series well after '55. The casting number will tell what you have by using the casting# chart at http://www.inliners.org/

He is referring to full pressure oil system. 1954 and 1955 1st series are the first 235 & 261. 1955 2nd series they changed a few things. I know for sure the oil pumps are totally different. I beieve the 1953 powerglide was also considered in the first series.
The earlier 235 don't count in this classification,they where babbit engines,oil dippers.

First series 235 and 261 took the m-29 oil pump. second series 235 and 261 took the m-45 oil pump.

The casting numbers are on the pass. side of the block. You can look them up here . If you know the engine is original ('56), the 54-62 235's are the full pressure 2nd series. Look up parts in a engine catalog and you can get an idea of what's what.
