I want to put a 283 in my 42 1/2 ton and would like to keep a stick shift so it looks original inside the cab. What gearbox would couple up to the 283 without too much trouble and still be able to use the original g/box mount

Kind of a hard question. First off, any bell housing that will fit the 283 will not match the bolt pattern on the 42 trans, so this means no 42 trans. Next, any bell housing that fits the 283 will not have the brake/clutch pedal mounts for the 42. What you could do is, get a 283 bell housing. Pre-fab the clutch/brake pedal mount and attach it to the bell housing. Next find a 49-54 4 speed. It will have the correct trans pattern and will link up to the torque tube drive. A better swap may be update to a later open driveline set-up. Just a couple possibilities. I'm sure there are more.

thanks Rick for the info. so if i was to go to an open drive train what g/box could i use that would be suitable. Would the T5 have the strength to do the job. bear in mind its a cruiser not a drag truck.

I would think the T-5 would work fine behind a mild 283. Going to the open driveline gives you a bunch of gear ratio options. Do a search on some of my other posts. We had some discussion a while back on this same subject an a lot of good ideas came out of them. I'm doing a similar project with my 46 ½ ton. Let me know if you need some pictures of how I did mine.
