For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Thanks. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | the brake return spring is on the MC [ see pic lower left], the clutch hooked to a tab on an oil pan bolt originally, but usually that's gotten changed to "what's handy" over the years - pic on the right here .... shop manuals and assembly manuals are quite useful Bill | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 679 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2006 Posts: 679 | Hugh- I can't provide any info regarding the clutch spring right now, but just last night I was connecting my brake spring, so it is still fresh in my memory. It attaches on one end exactly as shown in Figure 11 using Bill/Red58's first link. (Seeing that picture makes me think I have mine installed in reverse: I installed the straight portion at the brake lever.)
On my truck, the other end of the brake spring attaches to a section of tough wire, looped on one end, and tied to the frame on the other. This wire is about 6 or 8 inches aft of the brake line T-junction. I used a brake spring tool to pull against the tension and attach the spring hook to the loop.
Oddly (at least on mine!) when that spring is installed, it runs about an inch or so directly over the master cylinder cap. To take off the cap, you have to push the spring aside to get unobstructed clearance.
Bill
(Bill: I got the MC/brake linkage assembly installed last night; sure was a lot easier installing than removing! I hope to bleed the lines tonight.)

As you can tell, this is my first stovebolt. I knew that the 3 foot long spring hooked under the radiator was not correct. The previous owners of this truck have done everything wrong or backwards and I don't have the knowledge of what is correct. I have learned a lot just reading thru old posts, there is so much information here.

I'm replacing 1 oil pan screw with an extra long(1") stainless version. I'm having a hole drilled thru this 1/4-20 bolt about an 1/8 of an inch from the top..I'll then thread it in the pan/block and it will stick out the other side by about 1/2 inch. This will form a post. I have a new spring from Carter and I'll insert the end of the spring thru the hole in the bolt. If for some reason that doesn't work out I'll simply put a washer and nut on the bolt.
