i did do a bit of a search but whenever i try searching for stuff i never come up with much but anyway my question is I am in the process of re-wiring my 1952 Oliver 77 Row Crop, at some point in its lifetime someone switched it to a 12 volt negative ground system. on the non-pulley end of the generator there is a little flip up cap, i'm assuming this goes directly to the rear bearing, but you guys know the phrase "don't assume it makes an @$$ out of you and me" so i'm wondering does oil actually go in there and also what kind of oil should be used, during my search i found out that some of you can actually tell me what my generator came from by the numbers on the tag so i wrote it all down

anything with an oil cap was probably made to oil usually with something like 20w non detergent. Something like 3 in 1 oil will work. I wouldn't put in more than 2 or 3 drops. Never put oil in while it is running. Chek-Chart made lubrication charts for the oil companies in the 50's and 60's and maybe later when gas stations still serviced cars. Their recommendation was "lubricate sparingly every 5000 miles with motor oil"

A few drops of engine oil is what I've always used. An old mechanic passed that info on to me back in the 70's.

thanks for the help everyone i squirt a little in there once i get the tractor up and going again... i'm almost done with the wiring just need to wire the lights and the hydra-lectric controls (that should be fun....) i was kinda wondering since i always like to know all that i can would anyone be able to tell me what the generator came from? cause at one point i think they had a bigger generator because the cut a hole in the sheetmetal :mad: ..... but it was patched over with some galvanized tin
