Does anyone know if a 40 GMC 228 will drop in a 38 chev without serious modification to the frame? What I gathered from previous postings was the front engine mount and exhaust manifold are different. My "extra" 38 has a long stuck engine and a running 228 may land on my doorstep.

#42047 05/17/2002 6:10 PM | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,897 Member | | Member Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,897 | The main problems you will have are the clearance at the radiator as the GMC engine is longer.The front engine mount is located an inch+ further forward.
.You may solve the radiator clearance problem if you use the GMC radiator as it is mounted a little firther forward than the chevy.(side brackets are angled differently on the two trucks.
There is enough good in the worst of us and enough bad in the best of us that it does not behoove any of us to criticize the rest of us.

You will likely have to run a short shaft water pump and maybe even more to squeeze the longer 228 into the 216 space. | | |
