Hi all,
I need my steering box rebilt on my 1946 Chevy 1/2 ton. Do you know of a good rebuild shop or a vendor that carries quality merchandise? Any replies are welcome.
Thanks,
Possum

Most of the suppliers carry parts for them. If you have some tools & a plce to work they are not hard to do youself.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

When I rebuilt the box in my '42 2 years ago, I called Chevy Duty to find out who did their box rebuilds. His name is Tom Woods and he is in Texas. One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. It is really easy to do, and I found that by removing he parts, I could use the part numbers and the NAPA store could get them for me. His number is 214-284-4244.

For me, this guy is local. But he does ship. http://redheadsteeringgears.reachlocal.com/coupon/?scid=619324&cid=170750&tc=08060520141794104&kw=5007907&dynamic_proxy=1&primary_serv=redheadsteeringgears.reachlocal.net&se_refer=http%253A%252F%252Fsearch.comcast.net%252F%253Fq%253Dredhead%252Bsteering%252Bgears%2526cat%253DWeb%2526con%253Dbetaa

Agree with Wrenchbender -- I'm no mechanic, but I did mine ('49) with the kit I got from one of our vendors (check our Links page). Whole job took just a couple of hours.

Fun job, not too hard and I get a lot of satisfaction just turning the steering wheel.

Sometimes you get lucky. I always disassemble them to look at the condition of the worm shaft. On several I have found the bearing surface to be bad through lack of grease or in one case contaminated with water. Since the worm shaft is the inner bearing race on both ends it will not help to install new bearings against a worn race. If the bearing surface is bad I send them to a rebuilder.
