There are adapters available. Google speedshops.

The two-barrel through the 2->1 adapter will not work nearly so well as the one-barrel. However, if you don't mind the loss of fuel economy and the loss of power, the conversion might buy you a little time to fix your existing one barrel or replace it.

What if one were to mill the intake off flush with the runners and weld a 2bbl mounting flange sideways? Could a 2GC be used to it's full potential on inlines? Is there a formula that describes how tall the carb flange should be?

Curt - possibly, it would depend on the shape of the plenum. If the plenum is of sufficient size that the air/fuel from both barrels of the carburetor could enter the plenum with no restriction from the walls of the plenum, then the design should work. The air/fuel entering the plenum from the carburetor should NOT be restricted.

As to the height of the carb flange (or the distance from the plenum to the throttle butterfly): the optimal distance will vary based on the use of the engine. An engine for a truck (good idle, good low end torque) would have the carb flange very close to the plenum. More power at the high end of the RPM range (AT THE EXPENSE OF LOW END TORQUE!) may be obtained by raising the carburetor (eg. tunnel ram intakes). Raising the throttle butterfly in effect increases the volume of the plenum, and helps minimize individual cylinder pulsing.
