Hello,
Could anyone tell me where I might find new front wheel cylinders for a 1954 1 1/2 ton Big Bolt? I was also hoping to find new front brake springs and adjusters, if they are available.

If the springs/adjusters are not available, does anyone know if the 1 tons are the same size?

I already sent my brakes off to be relined, so I am covered there.

Thanks a lot!

Jim Carter's classic truck parts should be able to hook you up. They have an online catalog at www.oldchevytrucks.biz

Your flaps should be able to supply those.

I got all my brake system parts (except the master cylinder which came from American Classic) for my '49 4400 from my local NAPA.

Check with a local auto parts store that does not look like a fancy box dropped into the neighborhood.

You should get to know the folks at a local store. Check for a dirty rag or two on the counter, dust on the merchandise displayed, and someone who can find the really old parts catalogues and knows how to read them.

Take a sample of what you are looking for or planning to replace. The counter-guy will take a wire brush and gently clean off some of the grime, figure out the numbers, check the catalogue, and call one or more of his suppliers, then say, "UPS will have the part(s) here tomorrow afternoon."

Just remember, service and parts is not the cheapest, but it is the best.

Also, try any Bendix outlet. Your parts guy will have to order them by phone. I was lucky enough to find the four drum and master cylinders from the Bendix plant in Birmingham, Alabama for a 1953 4400. Hoses too. Bendix is the best.

I have a 1946 chev fire truck that I am restoring.( big bolt ) I put all new linning and wheel cylinders on. I found these parts at a brake supply that has been in the business for at least fifty yrs. They had no problem to get me new wheel cylinders. I took the old linning into the place and they resurfaced or rebonded new linning on the oringal shoes.
Be prepared though to pay the price.
I also rebuilt the master cylinder for a fraction of the cost of a rebuilt or new on. I think I pd. somthing like fifteen dollars for the kit. This was avalible at the auto parts supply store.
Jim Carter also has the parts but at a inflated price.

I'm tellin' ya, go Bendix. I was able to get the four 1 1/2 ton drum cylinders for between $25-$30 each and the master for $65-$70 - you just can't beat that! Just contact a good parts house in your region with the Bendix books and have the part numbers available - it's the only way they'll be able to find it. They won't be able to find it via the make/model. Also, you'll probably have to replace the wheel/axle bearings so you're not leakin' all over the place. There's a post that speaks to that in Big Bolts.
