That is correct info...no fiddling needed. The crux of the issue is, was it converted properly. If it was done wrong, your ammeter might not function the way it was intended to work.
Did your conversion involve a alternator, or did someone install a 12 generator?

If you had the 12 volt generator installed along with a new 12 volt voltage regulator and the charging systems works, but doesn't register a charge (or discharge) on the ammeter, then I would surmise that the ammeter is broken
The generator charges the battery THROUGH the ammeter. If your system is staying charged, then it's a mechanical failure of the little movement inside the ammeter. Does this sound right.

Sometimes someone will bypass it if something is not working right. It should have a heavy gauge wire on each term.
