Not to be difficult but , it appears this tranny has been bead blasted in which case it's _not_ ready to go , it must be dissasembled and clean very carefully or it'll grind itself to junk in a few throusand miles - guess how I know ? .

In So.Cal. , $350.00 is regular price for a good used _gauranteed_ O.D. tranny .

Well, if it was "glass bead" blasted, it will have to be cleaned out thouroughly to be sure to get all the blast-media out.If plastic beads or walnut shells were used, it is not so much of a big deal, but I would suggest cleaning it out ANYWAY!
If a person can get the inside clean enough, they can paint the inside to help seal the pores of the cast-iron metal. Doing so will help to hold any particle which may have been missed.

It's too much for a questionable, supposedly run-ready transmission. I'm sort of a skeptic here so I'd look at this as if it's a rebuildable core and would, at a minimum, have a transmission shop check it over really good. No matter how good it looks, I wouldn't just drop it in and go. The guys here have made some excellent points.

geez - pay attention guys - doesn't it count for anything that it's Jim Carter Truck Parts sellin it as "in excellent condition, painted and ready to install"??
they said painted, not blasted - don't hafta blast things to clean'em - I'd trust Carters used stuff to be as represented, and if it wasn't I'm sure your money would be speedily refunded . . . and 350 for a good, gone thru task force o.d. trans is entirely reasonable.

So what do you have to do to put this in an AD? Change to open driveline?

Any of you ever try "Overdrive, Inc." as highlighted in Tom Brownell's book, "How To Restore Your Chevrolet Pickup"? I don't think I've ever heard this mentioned on the 'bolt page.

Last issue of Vintage truck magazine this transmission was advertised for sale in the classified section.

I contacted the man who had it for sale. He was in the St. Louis area. He said it came from Jim Carter and was guarunteed to work correctly.

I was going to buy it, but after I had income taxes fiqured, the transmission money is going to the IRS. The guy who was trying to sell it told me he had washed and cleaned the transmission and painted it, didn't say anything about blasting it.

He also said if I would not buy it, he would be returning it to Jim Carter. It came out of a 55 Chevy car.

I am quite sure this is the same transmission. If you are worried about a guaruntee, call Jim Carter and find out before you bid.

Thanks for the post. It has been helpful in two ways for me. First, I've been able to identify the two I have as far as year. Secondly, now I should have a better idea to what they are worth. Looks as though he has one bidder so far. I think the killer is going to be the shipping because they are very heavy.

Shipping will not be very expensive at all. Try Yellow Freight.
I am in the middle of shipping a whole drivetrain, from rear axle housing including the torque tube. Also on the pallet is a 4 spd saginaw and assorted parts. Total bill $118.- (I did get discount through brother's company account)

I would guess just the tranny would be less than $50.-

I've shipped Saginaw tranmissions to the west coast from here in NY via UPS, about 55 bucks.UPS takes items up to at least 120 lbs or maybe more. Call their 800 number, charge the shipping costs, they pick it up at your house,no need to drive to a shipping terminal.Best to build a crate, but UPS will ship as is, of course a naked tranny might be used as a cast iron demolition ball by the dock workers.

Tony, I guarantee that UPS will use a bare, un-packaged/crated transmission not for just a wrecking-ball, but to use it to open other packages TOO eek

As for how the tranny came to be so clean, most of us would not have known that it was washed and painted or blasted with something and painted or if the chrome was stripped after the gold plating was removed :p grin
Thanks to the connection of the `Bolt we have people to fill in the unknown with knowledge of the transmissions history cool

Well I am the second bidder........

I asked Jim Carter's for a shipping quote and it was $139.31, but this is to Canada.

So I thought $500 was a little high, I'm still looking, but closer to home.

Okay, I'm looking for one of these trannys for a '59 half ton. If any of youse has one fer sale, lemme know. Hope I'm not violating any swap meet rules here (I've checked from time to time and haven't found any there). The only place that I've found that has them here in SoCal is in Santa Ana, and the guy wants $650 for it. He had a couple a few years ago at $250 each, but naturally I decided to wait and see if anything better came up. eek

I'm not to proud to say I need some education.I've got a 59 Apache with a 235ci,three on the tree and a 290 rear. Will a 3spd/overdrive unit bolt in? Does it stay on the tree? How is the "o"drive engaged? I'm getting 15mpg now so does it pay to swap?
Thanks in advance.

msteuer - yes it would swap right in for your 3spd - the only thing different is you'd need to add a kick down switch to the carb linkage, and a cable actuator under the dash - don't know if it'd be too good w/ a 290 rear tho - maybe you mean the stock 390 rear? from the factory, od equipped trucks had a 410 or 411 rear ratio, so w/ a 390 I'm hopin it'll be a treat, tho don't know if you'd improve mileage unless you're on the highway most of the time . . .

and Blaine - I know someone on the island that might be convinced to sell one - what's the offer? grin
