Is the big bolt on the drivers side of the box near the top where the cable should be housed? Is there a special mount or is it a plug in? It has male threads with a square hole in the center. The large end of the cable screws on to it after the cable core goes in the hole.

They big end was the same for many years. If it doesn't screw on the threads are stripped or the collar is out of round.

Thus an adapter between the cable and the collar might be required. These adapters are generally custom calibrated and fitted to the tranny.
This is what I had to do when I installed Patrick's 3.55's in mine.
