My son decided he wants to take the old 39 Chevy truck to Prom, but the transmission growls like a rabid dog. It started leaking too. I have no experience with transmissions. It sounds like some sort of bearing problem. I added some transmission lubricant, but that only lead to a bigger puddle under the truck. How hard is it to rebuild a stock three speed transmission? I assume there are special tools required. I’m thinking if I have to rebuild or replace the transmission I should explore all options. Would a 4 speed give me a higher gear for the highway? If I replace the 3 speed with a 4 speed which one will bolt in without many modifications? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Scott

They are not hard to rebuild as far as transmissions go. You will need agood set of snap ring pliers & a press. Changing to a 4 speed does not change the final drive ratio & would be more work changing the floor plate. If the noise in in the lower gears & is quiter in high it probably is brg. noise. You can put ring & pinion gears from a 50-54 pass.car with powerglide in the rear end to get better highway driving.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Well as a 40 gmc owner, I can understand your woes. The 3 speed is actually an eazier transmission to drive than the 4 speed. the 4 speeds had no syncros, so it required double shifting everything. My guess is the prom is sometime this month, and it may not be practical to drive that truck to it.

If he absolutely must drive it to the prom, fill it up with gear oil, and make sure the AAA membership is current. If and When the transmission finally gives up the ghost, you can call "Buffalo Steve" to make an adapter to bolt a t 5 transmission to your bellhousing. You will have to change or modify the rear at the same time for an open driveline.

Others have used the T5s and like them
